What is the Government’s Free External Wall Insulation Scheme?

Officially called ECO3, the scheme is an attempt for the UK Government to reach it’s goals in becoming Net Carbon Zero by 2050. ECO3 stands for the Energy Company Obligation, and in a nutshell it requires the biggest Energy Providers in the UK to pay back some of their profits to UK Homeowners. As a result of the scheme coming into place to help reduce emissions, the goal is to lower the amount of fuel homes use to stay warm. As such, the funding is used for energy saving measures which comes in two parts – Heat Generation and Heat Retention. Simply, the funding covers the cost of things that create heat or things that maintain heat. The scheme is often reffered to as the “free boiler scheme” as that’s the main heat generation measure that gets installed, but there’s many options for home improvement measures.

How can Hartlepool Homeowners Qualify for the Free External Wall Insulation Grant?

External Wall insulation is part of this scheme. Homes with a solid wall construction could be eligible for External Wall Insulation, as opposed to Cavity Walls, which then have the insulation inserted inside of the wall’s cavity. There is no space to inject insulation with solid brick walls, so the insulation goes on the outside, so as not to reduce the amount of inside space your home has. External wall insulation is added by fixing a wooden frame to the exterior of the walls, the frame is then filled with insulation before being boarded up and then rendered over the top to make it attractive and waterproof.

The benefit of external wall insulation is firstly that it helps keep the warmth inside your home. Secondly though, solid brick construction is prone to damp. This is because over the years as the bricks and cement heat up and cool down, cracks form between them. Because the wall is only one layer, the water gets right through and underneath the plaster on the inside of your wall which leads to damp and mould. Insulation your wall externally covers those cracks and seals the property back up so you avoid the damp and mould.
